It was a Tuesday morning when the engineer walked over to my desk, dropped a print on my keyboard, and said, “We need a quote on this before Friday.”
I looked at the drawing. It looked like a small metal block with some holes. Honestly? Like something a machine could knock out in an hour. Then the vendor quote came back: $950.
“Seriously?” I said to nobody in particular. “It’s barely bigger than my hand.”
That was my first lesson in how little I knew about CNC machining.
The Part Where I Almost Chose the Wrong Vendor
I manage purchasing for a mid-size manufacturing company—not the machining side, but all the outside buying, which is between 60 and 80 vendor orders a year. Most of it is dull stuff: tooling, office supplies, packaging, safety equipment. A $950 quote for five little parts felt outrageous.
So I went looking for a cheaper option. I found an online CNC service quoting $450 for the same part number. - Inspection—verifying the first part, and sometimes every part, against the drawing.
To make it worse, I learned that the online $450 quote didn’t include the material at all. Add that, add setup, add a note about the tolerance gap, and the quote jumped to $1,100. The “expensive” option was actually cheaper by $150.
I only believed that after seeing it happen to a purchase order. Now I get it.
Small Orders Make Big Demands
Here’s the part that challenged my assumptions. Back when I first started in purchasing, I thought big vendors would look at a small order like mine and brush us off. And in some industries, they do. But the machining shop with the Makino equipment treated our five-piece prototype order like it was a production run. The person on the phone didn’t sigh. They didn’t say “come back when you need a thousand.” They asked questions about the material, the finish, and whether it was a first article or a production part.
That matters. Because when you’re a smaller company, the jump from prototype to production is the riskiest part of the whole product lifecycle. A good supplier knows that. And if a vendor didn’t want to bother with my $950 order, I wouldn’t trust them with a $95,000 order six months later.
“So—is CNC machining expensive?” I asked the engineer, still half-hoping he’d say no.
“Depends on what you’re comparing it to,” he said. “It’s expensive if you don’t need the tolerance. It’s cheap if the part fails and stops a whole production line.”
That stuck with me. It’s tempting to think a metal part is a metal part. But the “always compare unit prices” advice ignores all the hidden cost drivers that determine whether a part actually works. As of January 2025, I’ve seen public pricing on online CNC quoting platforms range from $75 to $150 per machine hour, with setup fees from $50 to $200 depending on complexity. Those numbers vary by region and demand, but the pattern holds: precision is a premium you’re already paying one way or another—either in the quote, or later in scrap, rework, and downtime.
The parts we ordered arrived on schedule. The first article passed inspection. The engineer signed off without a single red mark, and that, honestly, was worth a lot more than $950.
If you’re an office person like me who suddenly has to source CNC machined parts, don’t get caught up in the cheapest quote. Pull up an end mill cutter size chart, ask what tolerance your part actually needs, and check whether your supplier is running equipment that can hold it. Even the fancy Makino milling machine won’t save you if you ask the wrong questions.
And if a vendor makes you feel small for a small order? Walk away. The ones who take your $950 order seriously are the ones you’ll still be calling when your order is a hundred times bigger—trust me, I’ve been on both sides of that desk.
